The recent passing of the IRA means significant opportunities for contractors to grow by starting to pivot towards working more with metal and solar.

In Season 4, Episode 65 of the Roofing Road Trips podcast Heidi J. Ellsworth sits down with Mark Gies of S-5! to discuss the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and how it will affect the solar and metal roofing markets.

Interest in solar panels has skyrocketed over the past few years, and with so many incentives to go solar coming out of the Inflation Reduction Act, the sector of the industry only stands to grow. Mark says that contractors looking to grow should start looking more at metal and solar as an opportunity.

“I think now  more than ever  there’s going to be demand and opportunity for these roofing contractors to expand their business into solar,” says Mark. “There’s going to be a lot of evolution in the area of the roof becoming tighter with solar and now the roofing contractors, there’s going to be a demand for them to do more of that business and make them fill that gap. That’s a tremendous opportunity I think for roofing contractors to look at.”

Metal roofs are notoriously durable and are among the few roof materials that can actually outlast the lifespan of a solar panel. As part of a metal roofing accessory manufacturer, Mark knows firsthand that the rise of solar is particularly promising. He suspects that roofers can see more metal roofs in the future as solar continues to grow in popularity.

“A metal roof is the best place to put solar,” says Mark.  “A metal roof will last 70 years or more. And a solar asset, like a bunch of solar modules, they last 30 or 40 years. So why would you put that on a roof that may need to be replaced in 20 years? It just makes sense to put it on a platform on a roof where you know the roof is going to outlast the solar system.”

Listen to the podcast to learn more about why metal and solar roofing stands to grow in the next few years due to the Inflation Reduction Act and for more information on how you can take advantage of this opportunity.
